About College of Foreign Languages

    Founded in June, 1993, the College of Foreign Languages at Jilin University traces its origin to 1950, when the predecessor of Jilin University, Renmin University of Northeast set up a special training course on Russian. In 1960, the Department of Foreign Languages was established. In 1976, the major of English, Japanese and Russian were among the first to run master programs accredited by the Ministry of Education. Currently, there are five majors that enroll undergraduate students, including English, Japanese, Russian, Korean and Spanish. The College of Foreign Languages also has one doctoral program in Japanese Language and Literature and six master programs, including English Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Asian African Language and Literature (Korean Language and Literature), Spanish Language and Literature as well as Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2009, approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the School of Foreign Languages at Jilin University set up an MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) program and was granted rights successively to enroll master students in Japanese-Chinese Translation, Japanese-Chinese Interpretation, English-Chinese Interpretation, Russian-Chinese Interpretation and Korean-Chinese Interpretation. Owning one of the five PhD programs in Japanese Language and Literature among nearly 400 institutes of higher learning nationwide which set up majors in Japanese Language and Literature, the Department of Japanese Language and Literature is a featured major and a key subject of Jilin Province; the Korean major is a featured major with national special support.

    Among the total 81 teachers, 26 are professors (4 doctoral advisors); 20 are associate professors and 27 are lecturers. All of the teachers hold master or higher academic degrees and have overseas education background or work experiences. 28 teachers have PhD degrees and 29 are PhD candidates. College of Foreign Languages has attracted a galaxy of scholars and experts with considerable influences at home and abroad, including one Chairman of the sixth Council of China Japanese Education Association, one Honorary Chairman of China Japanese Education Association, one Vice Chairman of the standing committee of China Japanese Education Association, two members of the Foreign Language Teaching Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, one Chairman of the Jilin Association for Foreign Language Teaching, one Vice Chairman of the China Association of Comparative Literature between China and Japan, one overseas commentator of the Japan Association of Japanese Language Education, one winner of the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Prize, one Outstanding Teacher of Jilin Province. In addition, several teachers at the school have won the Provincial Award for Excellent Achievement in Education. Every year, the SFL invites ten-odd foreign experts to teach at the school. The overall strength of the teaching faculty now heads the list of universities in China.

    College of Foreign Languages advocates rigorous and pragmatic research attitude. Since its establishment, it has published 98 works, of which 71 are compiled works and 27 are monographs. Of the 698 published articles, two are national research projects and 15 are provincial projects. Several of the project textbooks and project achievements filled up the gaps in related fields.

    There are now 1018 undergraduate students, 396 master candidates and 16 PhD candidates at SEL. In addition to the scholarships allocated by the university, College of Foreign Languages also provides Scholarships like Samchang Scholarship, Sumsung Scholarship, Dong Yung Scholarship, Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship, Woori Bank Scholarship, Miyagikenn Friendship Scholarship and Kazankai Foundation Scholarship for students with excellent academic performance.

    College of Foreign Languages is renowned for its fine tradition, rigorous teaching style and study style. The teaching quality has been keeping ahead among its counterparts across the nation. Students keep up an outstanding winning record in various major competitions both at home and abroad. Solid professional foundation, profound theoretical grounding, proper knowledge structure, strong practical skills and excellent comprehensive quality have guaranteed graduates of the college a competitive edge in the personnel market. College of Foreign Languages has cultivated a large number of exceptional talents, many of whom have become eminent scholars, diplomats and leaders of state organs, enterprises or public institutions. Among the Russian major graduates are the former deputy vice president of Jilin University Zhang Fuliang, the president of the Bank of China Russian Federation Branch Zhao Lianjie and the president of the Bank of China Kazakhstan Branch Tian Wei; among the English major graduates is the vice president of Beijing Language and Culture University Lin Guoli; among the Japanese major graduates are the deputy Party secretary and vice president of Jilin University Wang Shengjin, the president of Tianjin Foreign Studies University Xiu Gang, the vice president of the University of International Business and Economics Hu Fuying, the Chinese minister to Japan Han Zhiqiang, the spokesman for the International Department of the CPC’s Central Committee and director of the Asia Bureau Li Jun, the counselor of the Chinese Embassy in the United States Wang Yanxia, the vice director-general of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Huang Xingyuan, the vice director-general of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security Zhang Yali, the vice director-general of the Foreign Affairs Department of the State Forestry Administration Jin Puchun, the Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Yunnan Province Zhou Hong, the vice president and deputy Party secretary of China Radio International Zhang Fusheng, the editor-in-chief of the People’s China Magazine Wang Zhongyi and the renowned translator Lin Shaohua.

    College of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to academic exchanges and cooperation with both domestic and overseas institutes.  Adopting the communication path of “going global” and “bringing in”, it strives to create opportunities to expand its academic horizon in the hope of enhancing its teaching and research standards. College of Foreign Languages has sent dozens of teachers to attend academic conferences, receive in-service training, engage in cooperative research or study for a doctorate in countries and regions such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Cuba, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, Britain, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Every year, College of Foreign Languages funds over 80 students to study abroad. In the meantime, it not only invites more than 10 foreign experts to teach at the school but also employs several prominent scholars at home and abroad as part-time or visiting professors to give lecturers regularly at the school.

    After over 60 years’ development, especially after the strenuous construction during the eleventh five-year plan period, College of Foreign Languages has developed into an important base for the cultivation of foreign language professionals and the research of foreign language and culture, laying a solid foundation for future leap-frog development. Look into the future and we are bound to see a brighter tomorrow of College of Foreign Languages, achieved by the concerted efforts of both the faculty and the students.
