Academic Lecture of Russian Department, School of Foreign Studies —— “The thousand-year evolution path of Russian —— from Kievan Rus to Russia”

At 19 o’clock, September 16,2022, Wang Songting, professor, Doctoral supervisor of Information Engineering University, member of Steering Committee for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education and Deputy Director of Russian Subcommittee, gave an academic lecture at the invitation of School of Foreign Studies, Jilin University, through Tencent Meeting. This lecture, “The thousand-year evolution path of Russian —— from Kievan Rus to Russia”, was hosted by professor Li li, head of Russian Department. There were 213 online participants in total, including teachers and students both from Russian Department, School of Foreign Studies, Jilin University and other departments or universities.

At the very beginning, Prof. Wang embarked on a research-style discourse upon Russian filled with a sense of history, from the synchronic and diachronic perspectives and elucidates what is linguistics in and out of the linguistic framework, laced with classical allusions. Then he narrated three development phases of Russian from ethno-geographical origins, and extended them into nine nuanced stages so that audience can perceive distinct changes of Russian in the evolution. Afterwards, Prof. Wang told the Characteristics of Russian usage from Kievan Rus to Russia in accordance with historical development, and the impact and contributions that social context, renown scholars and writers have upon Russian. Also, he analyzed the thousand-year evolution path of Russian in detail by means of explaining pictures, showing tables, and dissecting examples. As a translator of Primary Chronicle, an initial Russian Chronicles Classics in ancient times, Prof. Wang gave precious academic suggestions to teachers and students present from the view of a translator.

After the lecture, Prof. Wang answered the questions patiently and carefully, proposed by participants in the comment section through typing or voice. This lecture lasted for 140 minutes, and teachers and students expressed their thanks to Prof. Wang for his marvelous lecture.
