On the morning of November 9, 2022, at the invitation of the School of Foreign Studies of Jilin University, Professor Wang Xiaoqun, former dean of the Foreign Language Department of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, who used to work in our school, had a discussion with the teachers of our school on discipline construction and other issues.
During the discussion, Professor Wang Xiaoqun introduced the transformation and achievements of foreign language discipline construction in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and shared with teachers their experiences in discipline construction, talent training, scientific research, teaching and social services. Professor Wang Xiaoqun puts forward: In the aspect of discipline construction, we should define the discipline orientation and create the discipline characteristics. In terms of talent training, we should make full use of our own advantages, "create conditions, build nests and attract phoenix", and establish a fair and reasonable talent evaluation mechanism. In terms of scientific research results, we should have a leading consciousness. It is necessary to establish cooperative research with experts and scholars at home and abroad and make full use of school and social resources to establish a scientific research team and create brand effect. In terms of teaching, we should constantly optimize the syllabus and curriculum setting and reform teaching methods. Students should be encouraged to participate in international and domestic competitions to promote learning, strengthen social practice, promote international exchanges, and cultivate critical thinking and leadership skills.
Professor Wang stressed that discipline construction is the top priority of the school's work, and it is necessary to have a sense of foresight, planning, layout, focusing and tackling difficult problems. Attending the discussion were Professor Zhang Meimei, Dean of the School of Foreign Studies, Vice Dean Jin Jing, Vice Dean Zhang Rui, and the Dean of the Russian Department Li Li,. President Zhang Meimei thanked Professor Wang for sharing valuable experience and exchanging views on related issues. Zhang Rui discussed with Mr. Wang about scientific research achievements, evaluation system and scientific research management. Other participating teachers also communicated with Professor Wang on their own understanding. This discussion lasted for more than two hours. Professor Wang Xiaoqun made a summary of his 13 years' experience and thinking in leading the construction and development of foreign language disciplines in Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, which benefited teachers present a lot.
About Professor Wang Xiaoqun: Professor and Former Dean of the Department of Foreign Languages, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Director of the Center for Canadian Studies, member of the National CET-4 and CET-6 Examination Committee, director of the Canadian Research Association in China, and member of the Shanghai Expert Committee on English Translation of Chinese Names in Public Places. From 1982 to 2001, he worked in Jilin University and served as deputy Dean of the Department of Foreign Language and Director of the International Division.
