Academic Lecture for the Russian Department — The Appreciation and Research Path of Poetry Texts

By invitation of the School of Foreign Languages of Jilin University, Professor Huang Mei of Beijing Foreign Studies University, a doctoral supervisor and postdoctoral cooperative supervisor, gave an academic lecture on "the Appreciation and Research Path of Poetry Texts" to teachers and students of our university via the Tencent Meeting platform at 19 pm on November 16, 2022. Professor Huang Mei also serves as a member of the Higher Education Foreign Language Education Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, an executive director of the Foreign Language Teaching Research Branch of the China Higher Education Association, a vice president of the China Bakhtin Literature Research Association, director of the Chinese Association of Foreign Literature and Comparative Poetics, director of the Chinese Association of Russian Literature Research, director of the China-Russia Friendship Association, and an executive director of the Chinese Central Asia Friendship Association of the Chinese People’s  Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

The lecture was hosted by Professor Liu Zuoyan, a member of the Higher Education Foreign Language Education Advisory Board of the Ministry of Education and a professor in the Russian Department of JLU. She introduced Professor Huang academic experience, achievements, and the importance of understanding poetry in Russian language teaching and research.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Huang briefly introduced the history and development stages of Russian poetry, and then started from the definition of Chinese and Russian poetry and introduced the rhythm, rhetoric, and emotional characteristics of Russian poetry through detailed and typical examples, allowing participants to develop an intuitive feeling for Russian language poetry. Then, based on different levels of poetry appreciation, such as melody, lexicology, syntax, rhetoric, and themes, Professor Huang used typical Russian poetry examples and adopted the method of "dissecting sparrows" to explain the entry points for understanding and researching poetry in a detailed and meticulous manner, providing practical and effective holds for the majority of participants to understand the beauty of Russian poetry and indicating effective appreciation methods. Professor Huang also pointed out that the understanding of poetry is influenced by times and personal experiences. As the interpretations of poems are not set in stone, she encouraged students to not fear authority, to dare to understand and research poetry from multiple perspectives and levels.

After the lecture, Professor Huang answered related questions from the audience, which included teachers and students from the Russian Department and others, with the total number exceeding 150. The lecture lasted for over two hours, and the participants benefited greatly from the lecture and expressed gratitude for Professor Huang excellent explanation.
