Introduction to the Speaker:Sunny Xiang is an Associate Professor of English at Yale University. Her research interests include literary and cultural studies in Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas.

Introduction to the Lecture: This lecture is based on the speaker’s monograph Tonal Intelligence: The Aesthetics of Asian Inscrutability During the Long Cold War (Columbia University Press, 2020). It explores the research method of “tone” by reading Korean-American poet Don Mee Choi’s 2016 mixed-media book Hardly War and the journal Intelligence Research. The speaker reinterprets archives activated by the Cold War and attempts to propose solutions to racial dilemmas.
