On the morning of April 4, 2019, Ms. Monica Yang, Director of International Cooperation at Brunel University London, and Dr. Sean Holmes, Vice President of College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences, visited our school. President Zhou Yifu, Vice President Zhang Meimei and Secretary of the Party Branch of the English Department Shen Hongmei attended the meeting. On behalf of School of Foreign Languages, President Zhou Yifu signed a memorandum of cooperation with Brunel University representative. Afterwards, the two sides held an in-depth discussion on specific projects such as student exchange, curriculum construction, faculty visits and scientific research cooperation.

In the afternoon, Ms. Yang Hui and Dr. Holmes had a discussion with graduate students from the English Department. Dr. Holmes gave a lecture entitled “Film Adaptation of Literary Works: A Study of Sherlock Holmes”. Both faculty and students showed great interest. Dr. Holmes talked about three film and TV adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes' Adventures, 1939 and 1984 and the most recent BBC series Sherlock, and pointed out the principle of film adaptation of literary works: film adaptation of literature should not be rigidly faithful to the original, but a continuous innovation and re-creation. Sherlock in the 21st century has successfully transformed into a modern man who is proficient in science and technology, and is still an undying icon. After the lecture, Dr. Holmes also gave a general introduction of Brunel University, as well as its postgraduate courses, specialty majors and application process. Ms. Yang Hui answered the students' questions on the postgraduate exchange project.
