On November 17, 2022, at the invitation of the School of Foreign Studies of Jilin University, Professor Hyungjang Lim, President of ESCI, and Professor from the Graduate School of Korean as a Foreign Language at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, gave a 2-hour lecture on "Understanding Korean Language Education for Translation Purposes" via the Tencent Meeting platform. The lecture was hosted by Meng Gang, a faculty member of the Department of Korean Language and Culture, and was attended by over 100 students and faculty members of the Department of Korean Language and Culture from the School of Foreign Languages of JLU and other universities.
Prof. Hyungjang Lim’s speech revolved on the following five aspects: translation as the ability to use language, education of translation between foreign languages and Korean, research on Korean language education for translation purposes, theoretical discussions on translation education, and the differences between Korean language education and translation education. Professor Lim analyzed the relationship between Korean proficiency and translation capacity for students, introduced the necessity of Korean translation education as a foreign language, and pointed out the direction for the education of Korean language and its translation.
After the lecture, the students asked Prof. Lim many questions about Korean acquirement and how to enhance capabilities of interpretation and translation, and Prof. Lim answered these questions in a patient manner. The lecture was of great value to the students, and the participants extended their respect for and sincere gratitude to the professor for his wonderful lecture.
